Gail Mays has spent the past decade encouraging other widows that God still has a plan for their lives and to lean into His love. It was a lesson she learned when her husband Steve Mays passed away in October of 2014 after more than 40 years of ministry together.

Nurtured in the Word, Steve and Gail Mays grew in grace as the Calvary Chapel movement blossomed and spread. From the 1960s to today, Calvary Chapel has grown from one small church in Costa Mesa, CA, to nearly 1,800 worldwide.

Calvary Chapel pastors get “up close and personal” with ancient sites from the seven churches Jesus addressed in the Book of the Revelation and other locations in Asia Minor, now modern-day Turkey—where groundbreaking ministry set the stage for the Church established after the resurrection of Jesus Christ. 

Traveling vicariously through the clouds, the circus mind runs wild: butterflies, zebras, moonbeams—all fairy tales. But all she ever thinks about is following the Wind. Don’t be sad, she leaves you with a thousand smiles, given freely. It’s alright, she says, it’s alright. Take anything you want from me; for it was freely given, everything.

In the early 1970s, lost in a life of confusion and sin, Gail saw a new light shining: the hope of Jesus Christ, transforming hippies and burnouts into born-again Jesus People. In one of Calvary Chapel’s Christian homes, she became a new creation in Christ and eagerly embraced her future with Steve Mays, a zealous young house leader.
