70 Christians Massacred in Congo

Pray for the families and communities of Christians in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) following the recent massacre of 70 Christians.

The bodies of 70 Christians—men, women, and children—were found beheaded inside a church in the DRC, following an attack by Muslim jihadists on February 13, according to Open Doors International, which serves persecuted Christians around the world. The jihadists were part of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), an armed group with ties to the Islamic State (ISIS). The believers had been captured from a village and taken to a Protestant church in Kasanga, where the bodies were discovered.

The murders occurred amidst severe ongoing civil violence in the DRC and conflict with the neighboring country of Rwanda.

An elder at the Evangelical Community in Central Africa church recently reported to Open Doors, “We don’t know what to do or how to pray; we’ve had enough of massacres. May God’s will alone be done.” In the wake of the killings, many Christians have fled the area. And even before the beheadings, churches, schools, and health centers had shut their doors because of the chaotic security situation, he said.

Pray for believers in the DRC—where being a Christian can cost them their lives—who are standing up to unimaginable barbarity. Pray also for an end to the violence and upheaval in the country.

Members of the Congolese Red Cross carry the remains of those martyred for their faith. On February 13, the bound and decapitated bodies of 70 Christians were found in a small church in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), slaughtered by a terrorist group with ties to the Islamic State (ISIS).

For five days, local militant groups would not permit the Congolese families to bury their loved ones.

While the DRC is 95% Christian, groups such as the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) have ramped up their terrorist activities attempting to enforce Muslim practices and take control of mineral-rich territories.

Decades of turmoil in the DRC has made it one of the most volatile places on earth.
