Nepal Flood Relief Update
Survivors of the catastrophic flooding in western Nepal received five tons of relief supplies last week from Nepali Calvary Chapel pastors. Representing Pennsylvania United Medical Assistance (PUMA), the pastors made the normal four-hour journey in 10 hours over nearly impassible roads. Pastor Steve Simpson, PUMA’s director and founder, shared testimonies from survivors, stating they witnessed “huge boulders hurtling down mountain passes in a wall of water, often a football field high.” PUMA is a medical and church planting ministry, based out of Calvary Chapel Central Bucks, PA, led by Pastor John Hessler.
The disaster began when a massive section of glacier and rock collapsed high in the Himalayas, unleashing an avalanche that became a devastating debris-filled flash flood. Scientists are still investigating exactly what caused the mountainside to fail. Dams were overwhelmed, sending torrents of rocks and water down stream, often 300 feet high.

Steve reported that another team is planning to journey again to the affected areas on Wednesday, September 30, as long as the annual monsoons allow them to travel. “It is beginning to get cold at night in Nuwakot district. People have asked for blankets, stoves, utensils, and various kitchen things,” Steve added.
Government officials were extremely thankful and surprised at the relief brought in. One official in particular remarked how “different” the Calvary Chapel team was. He said everyone could see that they really cared about the people and urged them to return again.
Steve gives all glory to God and is thankful for the supporters who donated funds to help minister to Nepal in the Name of Jesus soon after the disaster occurred.
“He who has pity on the poor lends to the LORD, And He will pay back what he has given.”
