I documented Calvary Vista’s mission trip to Hungary in 2002 for Calvary Chapel Magazine. When I joined that team, only God knew how deeply that time would shape my life, looking back 25 years.
Two months after that trip, I married the Hungarian translator, Olgi Csizmadia. Twenty years later, the assistant high school pastor on that outreach from Calvary Vista, Phil McKay, invited us to move Calvary Chapel Magazine to Reno, NV, and locate the magazine ministry to the church he was recently given leadership over.
And that 18-year-old worship leader? Phil Wickham. He and his brother, Evan, had joined other musicians and a large choir from CC Vista’s Christian high school to share the Gospel in a Hungarian town, hoping to plant a church. Phil Wickham would go on to become a prolific Christian songwriter/performer with deep roots in Calvary Chapel.
At first, the church plant seemed promising, but it faltered soon after the American team left. Still, the team shared the love of Christ, and only God knows its full impact on the Hungarians. Most of the team were teenagers back then. These photographs offer a chance to look back on our time together in Hungary and remember how they shared the Gospel message.
