“Let Freedom Ring” By a Brit living in America

Elizabeth Thompson | Office Manager at CC Magazine

The celebration of July 4th by a Brit is, to be honest, a little ironic, but as I am also a follower of Christ it has given me a different view of this important holiday. It is a celebration of the birth of a new nation, where we should be grateful to live freely in a country where we can still read the Word of God, vote, meet to worship our Lord, and other liberties that many other countries cannot enjoy.

“Let Freedom Ring” is not just a trite saying—it should be recognized as something that really wasn’t free at all. In fact, it was a costly reality, earned by many brave people suffering and dying.

This reminds me of another freedom, an eternal one where someone else suffered and died so that we can be free. Though our “freedom” in Christ came at a high cost, He paid our debt willingly. History is behind us and we move forward, but His-story is endless—the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow—something we should never move from.

Yes, I am and always will be a true Brit regardless of the cover on my passport; you can take me out of Britain but cannot take Britain out of me. However, I have such love and appreciation for both my countries and my eternal home with Christ Jesus.

Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.
— Galatians 5:1 NKJV

Cheers!
