Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb is a reward. Psalm 127:3

The genesis of abortion rights, premised on the calls of activists who wanted abortions to be “safe, legal, and rare,” with the goal of protecting women from performing their own “back-alley” abortions, has come full circle. Today, medical abortion (a two-pill regimen) has become the new back-alley method, as it places the burden of inducing abortions completely on women.

Medical abortion is a two-drug regimen promoted by pro-abortion groups as a do-it-yourself abortion method that potentially can be quite harmful, according to Dr. Vivien Wong. She is the medical director of A Place for Women, a ministry of Calvary Chapel Pearl Harbor, HI, that provides options counseling to those who are facing unintended pregnancy and contemplating abortion. It also ministers to post-abortive women and men.

As a radiologist, Vivien performs and oversees limited OB ultrasounds of women who come to the center to confirm their pregnancies. Vivien explained, “[Women] are led to believe that by taking two pills, their problems are solved. Many have the impression that medical abortion is a quick and simple method without life-threatening complications or long-term emotional effects.” Vivien would like Christians to know more about the regimen since many women suffer emotional, and even life-threatening, side effects. She declared that “they are not really told all about the complications resulting from a medical abortion.” According to the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists, there is a four-times greater chance of experiencing complications through a medical abortion than through a surgical abortion.

Vivien continued, “Women are using this regimen believing that it’s a lot less of a problem than surgical abortion, when in actuality it’s the other way around. The medical abortion process can go on for days or weeks. Often women are alone through this process and can experience a great amount of anxiety and fear.” Of course, A Place for Women steers women away from any type of abortion, medical or surgical.

A battle looms as the abortion industry desires to make abortion pills available through a pharmacy or the mail, making do-it-yourself abortions the future of the abortion industry, even being sold over the counter.

“For there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, nor hidden that will not be known.” Luke 12:2

Currently, before a self-induced medical abortion can occur, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) restrictions on the two-pill regimen require a woman to have an ultrasound to confirm that she is pregnant; to confirm that the pregnancy is within the gestational age of 10 weeks; and to determine if any complicating factors exist, like ectopic pregnancy. A pregnant woman is then prescribed the first pill (mifepristone, formerly known as RU-486) under the supervision of a physician at a women’s clinic (such as Planned Parenthood). Mifepristone chemically starves a preborn child of progesterone, a hormone that occurs naturally during pregnancy to maintain the uterine lining and also the placenta, the preborn child’s only source of nutrition. Blocking progesterone causes the placenta to degenerate so that it can no longer provide oxygen and nutrients to the child. According to Live Action, a pro-life group, unless the process is reversed quickly, mifepristone will kill the child approximately 70% of the time. Within 24 to 48 hours of the woman taking mifepristone, she is instructed to take the second drug (misoprostol), most often in the privacy of her own home, to self-induce uterine contractions with the purpose of expelling the (deceased) child from her womb. Approximately 7 to 14 days after taking misoprostol, the woman is asked to return to the medical office or clinic to confirm that the abortion has in fact been completed.

The FDA has tracked complications following medical abortions in the United States. Their findings, from September 2000, when they gave medical abortions the green light, through 2018 show that 24 women have died in some way as a result of the regimen. In that same time period, there have been over 4,000 cases with a severe effect and over 1,000 hospitalizations, as well as over 500 women needing blood transfusions.

Stacey Jimenez is the executive director of A Place for Women. She stated, “Decisions made in fear are not our best decisions, and they are the ones that we tend to regret.” Stacey related a case of a woman who had taken the first pill of the medical abortion regimen because of her difficult circumstances. She soon panicked, regretting her decision, and went online to abortionpillreversal.org, which led her to A Place for Women. The abortion pill reversal protocol is not always successful but can prevent losing the baby if done in time. “This woman was able to try to reverse her decision. After starting the abortion pill reversal protocol, the woman’s ultrasound showed the baby had a strong heartbeat,” Stacey related.

Sue Skinner, wife of Pastor Derald Skinner of Calvary Chapel Pearl Harbor, is the CEO/founder of the clinic. Sue concluded, “God loves the babies that are in the womb so much … He demonstrated that love when He sent His Son to be born ... to give each baby life. That’s why I fight (in this battle for life) because Jesus fought for my eternal life by entering the womb to ultimately be delivered up to death for my sins.”
